What is Split Testing? A/B tests for optimization of conversion rates and campaign performance.

Split Testing (also called A/B testing) is a method where two or more variants of a webpage, email, ad, or landing page are tested simultaneously to find out which one has a better conversion rate or performance. Split testing is the foundation of data-driven optimization in B2B marketing. Instead of making decisions based on gut feeling or best practices, you use actual user data to find out what works.

A simple example: You test two CTA button colors (red vs green). You send 50% of traffic to variant A (red) and 50% to variant B (green). After 1,000 clicks you see that green has 12% conversion rate and red only 8%. You implement green - easy 50% conversion improvement.

What is split testing?

Split testing works through a clear process:

1. Establish a hypothesis

What do you think will improve the conversion rate? Examples:

  • "A longer CTA text ('Get a Free Demo' instead of 'Demo') will be more clickable"
  • "A video on the landing page will increase conversions"
  • "Testimonials placed higher will increase trust"

2. Create two variants

Version A (control/original) and version B (variant with your hypothesis):

  • Change only ONE thing per test (otherwise you don't know what worked)
  • Don't run multiple tests simultaneously (confounding variables)

3. Split traffic

Users are randomly sent to A or B (50/50 or custom split).

4. Collect data

At least 100 - 500 conversions per variant (depending on statistical significance).

5. Analyze results

Which variant has higher conversion? Is the difference statistically significant?

6. Implement or iterate

Implement the winner. Or test a new hypothesis.

Split testing in B2B context

B2B pages are particularly good testing terrain:

In B2C you need to optimize quickly. In B2B you can do slower, deeper tests.

What should you test?

High-impact elements (test first!):

  • CTA buttons: Text ("Get Demo" vs "Start Free Trial"), color, size, placement
  • Headline: Different value propositions or angles
  • Form length: Short vs long form (3 fields vs 10 fields)
  • Offer/incentive: "Free Trial" vs "Free Demo" vs "Discount"
  • Social proof: With vs without testimonials, logos, counts
  • Video: With vs without explainer video
  • Price display: Show price vs hide, transparent vs vague

Medium-impact elements:

  • Copy tone (formal vs casual)
  • Image/hero (product screenshot vs lifestyle photo)
  • Trust signals (badges, certifications)
  • Urgency (limited time offer vs none)

Low-impact elements (don't test!):

  • Button border-radius (1px vs 3px difference)
  • Font color (subtle changes)
  • Minor copy changes (one sentence length)

Focus on high-impact elements. The ROI is significantly better.

Split testing best practices

1. One thing per test

Don't make multiple changes in one variant. Then you won't know which change is responsible for the result:

Wrong: Variant B has new headline AND new button AND new image.

Right: Variant B has only new headline.

2. Sufficient sample size

Don't decide with too little data. A conversion difference with only 10 conversions is not significant:

  • At least 100 conversions per variant (ideal 500+)
  • Or 2 - 4 weeks test duration (if monthly turnover)

3. Validate statistical significance

Just "A has 10% conversions, B has 9%" is not enough. It could be coincidence. Use:

  • Statistical significance calculator (Google: "A/B test calculator")
  • Goal: 95% confidence (p-value < 0.05)
  • Tools like Optimizely, VWO, Convert do this automatically

4. Don't forget edge cases

Test across different devices, browsers, scenarios:

  • Desktop vs mobile performance different?
  • Mobile video could load poorly - test mobile separately
  • IE11 might have different CSS behavior

5. Avoid sequential testing

Don't watch during the test and "stop early if A is winning". This leads to false positives. Decide test duration BEFORE, not during.

6. Segment the results

Not just "overall winner", but look by segment:

  • Paid vs organic traffic - different results?
  • New vs returning visitors - different behavior?
  • Desktop vs mobile - different conversion?

Sometimes variant A wins overall, but B wins on mobile - that's more complex.

Split testing process in B2B

Step 1: Collect baseline

Before you test, collect 2 - 4 weeks of baseline data without tests. This serves as control.

Not all tests have equal potential:

Step 3: Test design

Clarify before the test:

  • What is primary metric? (Conversions, leads, signups?)
  • How long should the test run? (2 - 4 weeks typical)
  • Traffic split? (50/50 ideal)
  • Sample size / significance level?

Step 4: Start test and monitor

Don't "set and forget". Monitor for:

  • Technical errors (variant B not loading?)
  • Unusual patterns (sudden traffic drop?)
  • External factors (campaign launch, outage?)

Step 5: Decide and implement

After sufficient data:

  • Check statistical significance
  • Implement winner (or "draw" - both equal)
  • Document (for future reference)
  • Start next test

Common split testing mistakes

  • Too low sample size: 10 conversions is not enough.
  • Multiple changes per variant: Don't know what worked.
  • Too many tests running in parallel: Statistically unreliable.
  • Ignoring results: Test shows B wins, but "I like A better" - implement A.
  • Ignoring seasonal effects: Test in December, implement in March. Buyer journey different.
  • Not iterating: Do one test and stop. Best results come from continuous testing.
